Adjustable link toilet suites explained: set-out, S-trap and what to measure
An adjustable link toilet suite is a floor-mounted toilet built for renovations, where the waste pipe in the floor is already fixed and you want the new pan to line up without moving it. If you are replacing an old toilet in a Brisbane or Logan bathroom, the question that matters is not the style but where your waste pipe sits. This guide explains what an adjustable link suite is, how set-out works, how to measure yours, and which suites on our site suit which measurement.
What is an adjustable link toilet suite?
Fienza describes it this way: an adjustable link suite is similar to a close coupled suite, but with an adjustable link connector that allows greater flexibility for renovation work. The pipe link is adjustable, so the pan can be installed above existing pipework in the floor.
In practice that means the cistern sits on or just behind the pan, as with a close coupled toilet, and the connection between them has some give. That give is what lets the suite reach a floor waste that is a little closer to, or further from, the wall than a standard pan would expect.
Fienza lists its own adjustable link suites with a concealed S-trap and a stated pan set-out range. For example, Fienza lists the Stella Adjustable Link Toilet Suite with a 140 to 255mm S-trap pan set-out and a WELS 4 star rating (4.4L full flush, 3L half flush). The set-out range is the number to check first.
Set-out explained
The set-out is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the centre of the waste pipe in the floor. Every floor-mounted S-trap suite lists the set-out range it can reach. If your measurement falls inside that range, the pan will line up with the pipe. If it falls outside, the pan will not connect without plumbing changes.
- S-trap: the waste goes down into the floor.
- P-trap: the waste goes back into the wall. You choose a P-trap pan, and set-out is less of an issue.
- Skew trap: the waste sits off to one side. A skew pan turns the outlet left or right to meet it.
How to measure your set-out
- Once the old pan is off, measure from the finished wall surface (the tile, not the frame) to the centre of the waste pipe. Use millimetres.
- If the wall is being re-tiled or re-sheeted, allow for the new thickness, because it moves the finished wall closer to the pipe.
- Note whether the pipe is centred on where the pan will sit, or off to one side.
- Take a photo of the pipe with the tape measure in shot. Your plumber, and our team, can confirm the reading from that.
Write the number down and bring it with you. It narrows the choice faster than anything else.
Which suites suit which set-out
These are the S-trap options listed on our product pages. Choose the option that covers your measurement when you add the suite to the cart.
Back to wall suites
- 90 to 160mm or 160 to 230mm: Fienza Koko, Kaya, Tono, Lillian, Escola, Empire, Hana and Delta.
- 90 to 160mm or 160 to 220mm: Fienza Isabella, Joli and Aluca.
- 90 to 160mm or 160 to 210mm: Fienza Alix.
- 90 to 280mm in one trap: the Fienza Delta Care, which covers the widest S-trap range we list.
- 90 to 200mm: the RAK Resort, supplied through Fienza.
A back to wall suite sits flush against the wall, so there is no gap behind the pan to clean. See all back to wall toilets.
Close coupled suites
- Chica: the Fienza Chica is listed with a P-trap, S-trap 90 to 160mm, S-trap 160 to 230mm or a skew trap.
- Fixed S-trap versions: the RAK Liwa is listed with an S-trap at 140mm or 240mm, and the RAK Washington White with an S-trap at 240mm. These suit a set-out at or very near that figure.
A close coupled suite is often the simplest like-for-like swap in an older bathroom. See all close coupled toilets.
When the pipe is off to one side
The Fienza Petra is a close coupled suite with a left or right skew trap, for wastes that do not sit on the centre line. Check the product drawing against your photo before you order.
Wall faced suites
A wall faced toilet has the pan against the wall and the cistern hidden in the wall or under a counter. Fienza lists these pans in S-trap and P-trap versions, so check the set-out on the specification sheet for the exact model.
Adjustable link, back to wall or close coupled?
If your set-out is unusual, an adjustable link or a suite with a wide S-trap range is the easier path, because it avoids lifting the floor. If your set-out falls inside a standard range such as 90 to 160mm or 160 to 230mm, most back to wall and close coupled suites will fit and you can choose on looks, seat height and flush. If you are taking the bathroom back to the frame anyway, your plumber can move the waste, and the whole range opens up.
We do not list every adjustable link model online. If you need one, call us with your set-out and we will check what Fienza can supply for it.
Before you order
- Confirm S-trap, P-trap or skew, and the set-out in millimetres.
- Check the inlet position (bottom or back) against where your water supply comes out of the wall or floor.
- Check the overall depth of the suite against the door swing and any vanity next to it.
- Have a licensed plumber install it, in line with the manufacturer's installation instructions.

FAQ
Is an adjustable link toilet the same as a close coupled toilet? Not quite. Both have the cistern sitting with the pan, but an adjustable link suite has an adjustable connector so the pan can sit over an existing floor waste across a wider set-out range.
What set-out do I have? Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the floor waste, in millimetres. Then compare it with the S-trap range listed on each suite.
Can I fit it myself? In Queensland, toilet installation is plumbing work and needs a licensed plumber.
Can I see toilets before I buy? Yes. Fienza suites are on display at our Loganholme showroom, Shop 4, 1 Bryants Rd, Loganholme QLD 4129. Bring your set-out and a photo of the waste, and we will help you narrow the toilet suites that line up. Pickup is free once your order is ready, or we deliver Australia-wide.
