Basin sizing guide: width, depth and tap hole choices

The vanity photo looked perfect. The basin arrived too wide for the mixer, too shallow for the tall spout, or with the wrong tap-hole count. Now the benchtop is drilled, the waste is wrong, and the mirror elevation no longer centres.

Basin size is not just "what looks good on the vanity photo". Width, bowl depth, overflow and tap holes have to work with the cabinet, the mixer and the mirror elevation.

Width and projection

Measure the vanity top clear space and any wall returns. A basin that is too wide crowds taps and bottles; too narrow looks lost on a wide double vanity (for example many 1200 mm cabinets). Shop basins, including undermount and semi-recessed types.

Depth and splash

Shallower bowls suit wall spouts and careful users; deeper bowls forgive taller mixers. Check spout reach on your chosen basin mixer (hob, tall or wall). Ask your licensed plumber about trap clearance under wall-hung cabinets - bowl depth and waste type interact.

Tap holes

• No tap hole (NTH) - for wall mixers or separate spout sets.
• 1-3 tap holes - must match the mixer you buy; do not assume.

Many Otti vanity titles call out 1-2TH and NTH options - read the product title and options carefully. Ordering a 3-hole basin for a wall mixer is an expensive mistake.

Overflow, waste and WaterMark

Pair with the vanity mount

Common South East Queensland renovation mistakes

• Ordering a vessel basin without checking mixer height and splash onto the mirror.
• Choosing a wide double bowl on a short wall where doors or a shower screen clash with elbows.
• Assuming every vanity top is pre-drilled the same way - read options for 1TH, 2TH and NTH carefully.
• Ignoring semi-recessed projection on a narrow walkway past the vanity.

Fix these on paper (or in the showroom) before the benchtop is cut. Product pages and manufacturer drawings beat guesswork.
