WaterMark explained: plumbing certification for Australian bathrooms
WaterMark is Australia's certification scheme for plumbing and drainage products. If a tap, shower, waste or similar fitting is installed in a plumbing system, it generally needs to be a WaterMark-certified product (or otherwise permitted under the applicable plumbing code). That is different from WELS, which labels water efficiency.
What WaterMark is for
- Safety and suitability - products are assessed against Australian technical specifications for plumbing use.
- Install confidence - licensed plumbers expect WaterMark-marked products for work that must meet the Plumbing Code of Australia / local rules.
- Traceability - certified products carry a WaterMark and licence details you can check against the product documentation.
WaterMark vs WELS
Think of WaterMark as "is this product allowed to be installed as plumbing?" and WELS as "how water-efficient is it under the test method?" A basin mixer can be WaterMark-certified and also carry a WELS star rating. See our WELS basics guide for stars and flow rates.

What to ask before you buy
- Is this exact model WaterMark-certified for its intended use?
- Does the carton / data sheet show the WaterMark and licence number?
- Any special install notes (tempering, isolation, pressure limits) your plumber needs?
- For showers and taps: what is the WELS rating as well?
We do not invent certifications. Where a product page lists WaterMark or WELS, it comes from manufacturer-stated information for that model. Your licensed plumber remains responsible for compliant installation.
