PVD vs electroplated tapware: differences that matter

The product page says "PVD gunmetal". Another listing just says "electroplated black". Both look dark on a laptop. They are not the same process - and care, warranty wording and long-term wear can differ even when the swatch looks similar.

Customers ask this constantly on the Elenni floor. Here is the plain-English split, and confirm hardness numbers or fake "best coating" claims on the product page.

What each process is

• Electroplating deposits metal layers using an electrical process in a bath. Chrome on bathroom tapware is commonly produced this way. Quality varies with preparation, layer build-up and sealing.
• PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) applies a thin coating in a vacuum chamber. It is widely used for harder-wearing coloured finishes (many gunmetals, brushed golds and similar), but the exact stack and hardness depend on the manufacturer's process.
• Neither label replaces care instructions. Abrasive cleaners can damage either finish.

What this means when you buy

1. Buy finish as a system from one range where possible - mixer, shower, accessories in the same finish code.
2. Ask which process the manufacturer states for that exact SKU. Do not assume every coloured mixer in a brand is PVD.
3. Check warranty wording for finish cover separately from cartridge / mechanical cover.

Chrome vs coloured finishes

Chrome remains the most familiar electroplated bathroom finish. Coloured finishes (gunmetal, brushed gold, matte black and similar) are where PVD language appears most often - but always read the brand's own specification for that SKU.

Care that actually matters

Soft cloth, manufacturer-approved cleaner, rinse and dry. Avoid scourers and harsh bathroom sprays unless the brand explicitly allows them. Matching accessories without mixing coatings blindly

Even inside one brand, not every accessory uses the same coating stack as the mixer.
