Gunmetal vs matte black tapware: how to choose
You picked matte black tapware on your phone. In the bathroom, under north light, it suddenly looks blue-grey next to the tiles - or your partner brings home a "gunmetal" sample that reads almost brown. Two dark finishes; two different rooms.

How they typically read
- Matte black - flatter, deeper black; strong contrast on pale tiles and white vanities; can show fingerprints or residue if cleaned with the wrong product.
- Gunmetal - softer, often cooler or slightly brown-grey depending on the brand; usually hides minor marks better; pairs well with concrete looks, mid-tone tiles and timber vanities.
Neither is "better". The right choice is the one that still looks intentional when your tile, vanity timber and window direction are in the same frame.
Facts vs taste
Fact: finish names and coating processes differ by brand. Always compare physical samples of the exact SKU family you will buy - not a generic "black" swatch from another range.
Taste: cool grey tiles and concrete looks often favour gunmetal; bright white gloss and crisp white basins often favour a true matte black for contrast. Warm oak vanities can go either way - bring a timber sample.
Match the set, not just the mixer
A mixer alone is easy. The renovation fails when the shower rail, spout, towel rail and toilet-roll holder drift into three different blacks. Where you can, stay inside one brand finish code for the wet area. Shop tapware, then cross-check showers and accessories in the same finish collection.
If you must cross brands, put pieces side-by-side in the showroom under the same light. "Matte black" from two manufacturers is rarely identical.
Cleaning and water marks
Matte coatings often dislike abrasive cleaners; chrome shows spots; brushed surfaces hide minor marks better. Ask which cleaners the manufacturer states as safe for that coating. Brand warranty wording for finish cover is separate from cartridge cover - read both.
