Tapware finish care guide
Bathroom tapware finishes look their best when cleaned gently and protected from harsh chemicals. This page shares general manufacturer-style care advice that most brands recommend for chrome, matte, brushed and many PVD-coated finishes. It is not a chemical specification and it does not replace the care sheet that ships with your product or appears on the brand's site. Always follow the brand care sheet for your exact finish.
Everyday cleaning (most finishes)
- Wipe with a soft, clean cloth and warm water
- Use a small amount of mild liquid soap if needed, then rinse and dry
- Dry after use in hard-water areas to reduce spotting
- Avoid abrasive scourers, powder cleansers and rough paper towels that can micro-scratch
What to avoid unless the brand care sheet allows it
- Strong acids, bleach, ammonia and undiluted bathroom descalers on the finish surface
- Solvent-based cleaners and acetone-style removers
- Steel wool, polishing pastes and "restore the shine" compounds not listed by the manufacturer
- Leaving wet cloths or metal jewellery resting on the finish for long periods
PVD and specialist coatings vary by brand. Some tolerate more cleaning agents than others. If the care sheet and this page disagree, the care sheet wins.
