Shower wastes and floor wastes: sizing and finish matching

The shower rail is ordered in matte black. The waste is still "TBC". On tiling day the only grate on site is chrome - or a black that does not match the mixer. Wastes are easy to leave until quotes are done. That is usually when the finish story breaks.

Sort waste type and finish when you choose showers and mixers, not after the membrane is scheduled.

What to decide early

• Outlet size and trap - your licensed plumber confirms what the stack and waterproofing detail need. Do not guess from a photo.
• Grate style - square, round, tile-insert, linear; each changes look and cleaning.
• Finish - match or deliberately contrast with shower and tapware finishes.

Linear vs point wastes

Linear drains need the correct fall and membrane detailing; point wastes are common in renovations where the slab and fall already exist. Neither is universally "better" - it depends on the wet-area design and who is waterproofing. Your waterproofer and plumber should agree the detail before product lands on site.

Finish matching in practice

Under showroom light, "black" wastes from different brands diverge. Bring your shower rail or mixer sample when you pick a grate. Cross-check finish collections such as matte black and gunmetal.

What to bring your plumber

• Preferred grate style (point vs linear) and finish sample or SKU.
• Shower size and whether the fall already exists or will be built in a hob / wet-room screed.

Linear drains in particular need early coordination with waterproofing. If the membrane detail is not agreed, pause the product order rather than forcing a grate into the wrong fall.
