Vanity tops explained: ceramic, stone, solid surface and more
The vanity top is the part of the cabinet you touch, wipe and lean on every day, yet it is often chosen last, after the cabinet colour and the tapware. That is backwards. The top decides how the basin sits, how many tap holes you get, how the edge feels against your hip and how much care the bathroom needs for the next ten years.
This guide walks through the top types you will see on vanities in our range, what each one is good at, and what to check on the product page before you order. Every figure below comes from the supplier details listed on our product pages.
Start with how the basin and top work together
There are three common ways a basin meets a vanity top, and they narrow the choice of material straight away:
- Moulded top: the basin and top are one piece. There is no joint between bowl and bench, so there is nowhere for grime to collect. Ceramic and cast marble moulded tops work this way.
- Undermount basin: a separate bowl is fixed under a cut-out in a stone or solid surface top. The bench wipes straight into the bowl.
- Above counter basin: the basin sits on top of a flat top, and the tap usually goes on the wall or on a tall basin mixer. The top can be stone, ceramic or another flat material without a basin cut-out.
If you already know which basin style you want, read our guide on undermount vs above counter basins first, then come back to the material.
Ceramic tops
Ceramic tops are fired in a kiln and glazed. They are usually moulded with the basin as one piece, so the bench and bowl are a single, easy-wipe surface. That is why ceramic is such a common choice for family bathrooms and ensuites where the top gets splashed constantly.
A few supplier details worth knowing:
- ADP notes that because of the manufacturing nature of ceramic, size variation of plus or minus 5mm is to be expected, due to the 1200 degree kiln vitrification process. If your vanity is going between two walls, leave for that.
- Aulic offers a Crystal Ceramic Top as one of the top options on many of its vanities, including the Verona Mark II and Tuscana ranges.
- Otti lists ceramic tops across its vanity ranges, with a 5 year warranty on ceramic tops for domestic purchases.
Ceramic suits you if you want the simplest surface to clean and you are happy with the basin shapes the moulded tops come in. It is less suited to an undermount basin or a custom basin position.
Cast marble moulded tops
Cast marble is a moulded material, so like ceramic it can be made with the basin in one piece. ADP offers ceramic or cast marble moulded tops on several vanity ranges, with 0, 1 or 3 tap hole options depending on the model. The choice between ceramic and cast marble often comes down to the basin shape and the edge profile you prefer. Check the tap hole options listed on the product page, because they vary between sizes.
Stone tops
Stone tops are cut from a slab, which means the basin is a separate piece. That opens up undermount and above counter basins, flat benches with no basin cut-out, and more choice of colour and pattern. Stone tops in our range include:
- Otti stone tops, with a 7 year warranty on stone tops for domestic purchases. Some Otti models, such as the Hampton Mark II, list both an undermount (UD) stone top and a 60mm stone top option, so you can choose a slimmer or chunkier edge.
- Aulic stone tops, offered as a flat stone top or a stone top with an undermount basin, in colours named Cato, Snow, Pure, Palis White and Alpine on models such as the Tuscana and Verona Mark II.
- ADP benchtop options in 20mm or 40mm thickness on a number of ranges. ADP notes there is no extra charge for the basin and tap hole cut-out on those benchtop options.
Stone is the right call if you want an undermount basin, a particular colour or a heavier, more solid look. Two practical points: a stone top with a separate basin creates a joint between bowl and bench to keep clean, and a thick top adds weight, so follow the manufacturer's fixing instructions for wall hung cabinets.
Sintered stone tops
Aulic lists a sintered stone top option on some of its mini cabinets, such as the Mini Ravia Fluted range, alongside a cabinet only option. Sintered stone is a manufactured slab with a stone look. On the product page you will see it as a separate top option, so you can choose the cabinet with or without it.
Solid surface tops
Solid surface is a moulded material that can be shaped into a top and bowl with no visible join. ADP uses a matte white solid surface top with a left or right hand bowl on its Drift range. ADP also lists solid surface benchtop colours on some vanities: 20mm Cherry Pie Premium Solid Surface in colours such as Bright White, Alabaster, Carrera and Grey Travertine, and 12mm Durasein Solid Surface in colours such as Arctic White and Nimbus.
Solid surface suits a modern, matte look with the bowl and bench in one material. Check the bowl position (left, right or centre) against where your plumbing sits before you order.
Timber and other looks
Some vanity ranges pair a stone or timber-look top with the cabinet. If you like the look of timber on the bench, check the product page for the exact material and care notes, because a timber surface near a basin needs more attention than ceramic or stone. Fienza, for example, notes that some of its basins are not compatible with its stone and timber top vanity range, so always confirm the basin and top pairing on the product page.
Warranty on the top is not the same as the cabinet
This is the detail most people miss. The supplier warranty on the top is often different from the warranty on the cabinet:
- Otti: vanity cabinet 25 years for domestic purchases from 1 Dec 2025 (vanity runners 10 years), stone tops 7 years, ceramic tops 5 years, 1 year labour.
- Aulic: moisture-proof cabinet 10 years replacement product or parts, top or top with undermount basin 2 years replacement product or parts, and 12 months replacement product and labour.
Read the warranty line on the product page for the exact model you are buying, because ranges can differ.
Quick comparison
- Easiest to clean: ceramic or cast marble moulded tops, because there is no joint between basin and bench.
- Best for an undermount basin: stone or solid surface.
- Most colour choice: stone, including the Aulic and ADP colour lists.
- Seamless modern look: solid surface with an integrated bowl.
- Tight wall-to-wall fit: allow for the plus or minus 5mm ceramic tolerance noted by ADP, or choose a cut stone top.
What to check before you order
- Top options on the listing. Many vanities can be ordered as cabinet only or with a choice of top. The options are listed on each product page.
- Tap holes. Moulded tops come with set tap hole options (often 0, 1 or 3). If you want a wall mixer, choose no tap hole.
- Basin compatibility. If the basin is separate, confirm it suits the top and the cabinet depth.
- Overall depth. The top can add depth beyond the cabinet. Many Aulic models list an overall depth of 460mm.
- Waste and overflow. Check whether the basin needs a waste with or without overflow, and whether it is included.
- Installation. Vanities are installed by a licensed tradesperson in line with the manufacturer's installation instructions, including fixing and waterproofing requirements.
