  • Why matching finishes matter more than matching photos

    Sep 20, 2026

When you pick a basin mixer, shower rail or towel rail, colour feels simple. Choose a finish you like, match the photos, and everything should look the same. In a real bathroom, that depends a lot on which finish you chose.

Finish names travel between brands. The metal under them does not. Two products can share the same finish label, or look close in a photo, and still sit differently under the same light.

Chrome and matte black are usually the forgiving ones. Across brands they tend to read close enough that a small mix rarely stands out. The rest of the colour range is where the gap shows: brushed and polished golds, champagne, bronzes, gunmetal, carbon, white, and the nickel family. Take brushed nickel as an example: one brand can look cooler, another warmer, even when both are sold as brushed nickel. That same kind of shift happens across those other finishes too. That is why we treat finish matching as a buying decision, not a styling guess.

Photos are a guide, not a colour guarantee

Product shots are taken under studio lights, edited for the web, and viewed on different screens. They help with shape, size and a rough sense of tone. They do not guarantee that Brand A and Brand B will match in your bathroom, even when both are called the same colour.

PVD finishes and traditional plated finishes are different processes. Even within PVD, each maker runs its own recipe. A champagne from one brand and a champagne from another can land warmer, cooler, more yellow or more pink. Bronzes, golds and nickel tones shift the same way. Mixing brands on purpose can look designed. Mixing them by accident usually looks unfinished.

    What we recommend

For chrome or matte black, you have a bit more room if you need to mix brands. For every other finish, keep wet-area hardware in one brand and one finish family wherever you can:

    • Basin mixer and shower (or bath spout) in the same brand and finish
    • Shower fittings and accessories (hooks, rails, toilet roll holders) from that same brand finish set
    • If you need a second brand for a special piece, treat it as a deliberate contrast, not a near-match

That applies across PVD and non-PVD, electroplated and coated. Same brand, same named finish, so the colour that arrives in the carton is the colour you planned.

Warranty is simpler with one manufacturer

Colour accuracy is the main reason. There is a second one that is easy to forget until you need it: warranty.

If a mixer, shower and accessories all come from the same brand, a claim sits with one manufacturer. One set of terms, one contact path, one story about what was installed. Split the bathroom across several brands and you can end up explaining the same fault to more than one maker, or getting bounced between them about which product is responsible. Keeping one brand for the wet-area set does not only keep the metal consistent. It also keeps after-sales support cleaner if something fails later.

The small matches most stores skip

A lot of online bathrooms stop at "this photo looks similar." We do not. On Elenni we aim for as close to full finish accuracy as the catalogue allows: true same-model colour siblings across every finish family, Shop by finish collections that keep distinct tones separate when finishes share a label but not the same metal, and Pairs well suggestions that keep mixer, spout and accessory chips in the same finish on one product page.

Those little matches (shower fittings with accessories, bath mixer with spout, rail with robe hook) are easy to skip. They are also what makes a bathroom feel intentional instead of pieced together, especially once you move past chrome and matte black.

How to shop it with us

    1. Choose your hero piece first (usually the mixer or shower).
    2. Lock the brand and finish.
    3. Add the rest from that brand finish set. Use Pairs well and Shop by finish as shortcuts.
    4. Only mix brands when you want contrast, or when you are in chrome or matte black and a careful mix is acceptable. Do not mix on the other finishes hoping the same name will land the same.

If you are unsure whether two finishes will sit together, ask us before you order. Matching the metal is part of what we are here for.
