WELS basics for bathrooms: stars, flow and what to ask
WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) is Australia's water-efficiency label for products such as tapware, showers and toilets. It is separate from WaterMark, which relates to plumbing product certification for installation - see WaterMark explained.
What the label tells you
- Star rating - higher stars generally means more water-efficient under the test conditions for that product type.
- Flow rate - often shown in litres per minute for taps and showers; useful when comparing models in the same category.
How we use WELS on the floor
When you shortlist tapware or showers, ask for the WELS rating on the specific SKU (finish variants are usually the same hydraulically, but always confirm). If a product page is still being enriched, we can pull the manufacturer data in the showroom.
Comfort vs efficiency
Very low flow can feel weak on a rain shower if pressure or the rose design is not suited to your home. Efficiency matters; so does daily use. We help you balance both rather than chasing stars alone.
Factual vs recommendation
Fact: WELS ratings are determined under standardised tests published for that product class.
Recommendation: confirm rating on the exact model number before ordering a whole matching set, and have your licensed plumber confirm site pressure and tempering requirements.
