WELS guide for Australian bathrooms
WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) helps Australian buyers compare water use on taps, showers, toilets and related products. This guide explains the buyer basics only. Star ratings and flow figures are model-specific - always read the label or rating on the product page and the supplier marking for the exact SKU. Elenni does not invent or restate WELS numbers that are not shown for that product.
Stars and flow - what buyers usually care about
- Star rating - more stars generally means better water efficiency for that product type under the WELS scheme
- Flow rate - often shown in litres per minute (L/min) for taps and showers; useful when you are matching pressure feel and water plans
- Product type - basin mixers, showers and toilets are rated in their own categories; do not compare a toilet star to a shower star as if they were the same scale use-case
WELS is about water efficiency labelling. It is not the same as WaterMark (plumbing suitability). Many bathroom fittings carry both - check each marking separately. See also our WaterMark guide and the blog WELS basics for bathrooms.
Practical buying tips
- Decide the product type first (basin mixer, shower, toilet), then compare WELS within that type
- Match the rating on the page to the exact model/SKU you will order
- Ask your plumber about minimum flow needs for temperature control or multi-outlet showers in your home
- Bring product pages or photos to the showroom if you want a second set of eyes on the markings
